Guidelines for Submissions

IJHSE publishes original papers in the field of sustainability, including environmental management systems, curriculum greening and operational aspects of environmental improvements at higher education institutions. The Journal shall focus on state-of-the-art papers, that reflect new concepts, ideas and changes brought about by those engaged in pursuing sustainability and working in related disciplines.

In addition to papers and articles, book reviews, news items and features will be published. For submissions other those related to papers and articles, please contact the relevant editors to discuss the format of your submission. Letters to the editor will be published on approval by the editorial board.

Submission of manuscripts (papers and articles)

One (1) original and two (2) copies of each manuscript, which has not been published elsewhere before, should be submitted to the editor. IJHSE considers all manuscripts on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to it, that they have not been published already, nor are they under consideration for publication, nor in press elsewhere. Authors who fail to adhere to this condition will be charged all costs which IJHSE incurs, and their papers will not be published. All accepted manuscripts, photographs, and artwork become the property of the publisher. Exceptions to this may be negotiated on exceptional cases.

Transfer of copyright

Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher (JAR form). This form is available from the Editor.

Preparation of Manuscripts

Manuscripts should be concise, yet sufficiently detailed to permit critical review. Page 1 of the paper should contain the paper/article title, the names and institutional affiliations of all authors, and the name and complete mailing address, telephone, fax and e-mail of the person to whom all correspondence and proofs should be sent. Accepted manuscripts in their final, revised versions, should also be submitted as electronic word processing files on disk.

Page 2 should contain an abstract, which should not exceed 250 words. Articles for publication may only be submitted in English. Manuscripts should also adhere to the following structure:

Keywords

Identify important subjects covered by the paper which are not listed in the Title. Authors must provide from three to ten alphabetised keywords or two-word key phrases. They should be placed following the Abstract.

Headings

All headings for sections and subsections should be typed in lowercase letters and placed on separate lines. Do not underline any headings.

References

Literature citations in the text should be by author's name and year; when references are by three or more authors abbreviate to the first name and et al.: "Smith ( 1982) has shown ... Previous work (Smith & Jones, 1982; Jackson, 1983a, b) has demonstrated that . . . Jackson et al. (1982) have shown that. . . ." The list of References should be given in alphabetical order, with all authors and editors listed. Full titles and full pagination of publications should be given. Follow the examples shown:

a) Journal article

White, J., Brown, H. (1999) New formation and campus design. In Journal of Design Science 45: 35-56.

b) Book:

Jones, N. L. (1999) Environmental Analysis. Prentice Hall, New York.

c) Chapter from a book

Richardson, N. M. (1999) Viability of Curricular Changes. In Mendez, H. (ed) (1999) Modern Curriculum. International Approaches, pp. 19-27. Prentice Hall, New York

d) Reports:

Nash, T. H., (1999) Agenda 21 at Universities. Ecology Center, Utah State University, Logan, Utah.

Tables

Each table should be typed on a separate page, and numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. The headings should be sufficiently clear so that the meaning of the data will be understandable without reference to the text. Explanatory footnotes to tables are encouraged and they should be indicated by lowercase, italic, superscript letters, beginning with ` in each table. Do not use vertical lines to separate columns.

Illustrations (Figures)

The number of illustrations (line drawings, wherever possible) should be limited to the minimum needed to clarify the text. Double documentation in figures and tables is not acceptable. Graphs moist have a professionally prepared quality. Clear printouts from laser printers (or equivalent devices) on quality paper are acceptable. No part of the drawing should be handwritten. Individual figures should be prepared at approximately 15 x 18 cm size; they will be reduced to the printing width of 12.5 cm, and all elements in the drawing should be clearly legible at this reduction. The letters and symbols should be approx. 2 mm high after reduction. It is preferable to include the legend of symbols in the graph. All terms, abbreviations, and symbols must correspond with those in the text.

Each illustration should be identified by the authors' names and figure number, preferably written in a clear corner area. One original set of all figures (photographs, line drawings) must be submitted as sharp, glossy, high quality prints (Xerox-type prints are not accepted) along with three xerographic copies of the originals. Photographs should exhibit a high contrast. Arrows, letters, and numbers should be inserted preferably with template rub-on letters. Micrographs should have an internal magnification marker: the magnification should also be stated in the legend.

Bionotes

A short bionote should be provided on a separate sheet and be located at the beginning of a paper.

Proofs

One set of page proofs is sent to the designated corresponding author. Proofs should be checked and returned promptly.

Reprints

The corresponding author of each article will receive one complete copy of the issue in which the paper/article appears. Reprints of an individual article may be ordered from MCB University Press.
